One of the most astoundingly prolific artists in history, the German Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann was a contemporary of Bach and Handel, widely revered in his time and now enjoying a considerable revival in the present age. One of Telemann’s more ambitious projects (because 1,400 cantatas and 600 suites were not enough) was his compilation Musique du table (Tafelmusik, or “Table Music”).
Each of the three different “productions,” or volumes, of Telemann’s Tafelmusik is intended as a complete musical accompaniment for dinner; the composer’s target market consisted of aristocratic households, which paid handsome sums for the privilege of owning these ready-made serenades and having them performed at mealtime by their own musical contingents at home.
This evening, in Nichols Arbor of the Huntsville Botanical Garden, we invite you to join us in the enjoyment of Tafelmusik No. 3 – served alongside an elegant menu designed and prepared by the Little Dipper Bakery and Café. It’s a rare opportunity to relive a little of the XVIII century right here in Huntsville, all in good courtly company.

Casual Classics concerts are “outside-of-the-box” classical performances involving smaller HSO ensembles and a shorter performance length. Often Casual Classics performances pair classical music with an activity or present it in a non-traditional (non-concert hall) setting. Performances are generally an hour in length and occur on Sunday afternoon, or in the case of the dinner concert, Sunday evening.
