Music Director and Conductor:
|Stravinsky||Octet for Winds|
|Mendelssohn||Octet for Strings|
This evening’s chamber selections are separated by a century and are written for divergent forces: one is for strings, the other for winds. But both are octets—large-scale compositions for eight players—and in both, the artists are actively exploring their own burgeoning relationships with the Classical masters. Mendelssohn’s Octet for strings, created when the composer was a boy of sixteen, is a youthful, vigorous, and ambitious essay reflecting examples by Beethoven and Schubert, among others. The Octet of Stravinsky employs a motley assemblage of woodwinds and brass in establishing and exercising the composer’s imaginative Neoclassical voice, a distinct combination of the piquant and the refined.
In 2017, following the success of their Church Street Wine Shop, Stephanie and Matt Mell opened the restaurant Purveyor at The Avenue in downtown Huntsville – “Fine dining in an easygoing atmosphere,” as Stephanie puts it. The HSO is pleased that Purveyor and executive chef Rene Boyzo are catering tonight’s delectable meal.
