Tamás Varga, Principal Cello of the Vienna Philharmonic, joins the HSO and our newly appointed Concertmaster for a double-feature of many dimensions: cello and violin, Brahms and Bartók, Romania and Hungary, rhapsodies and dances. Bartók’s lyrical rhapsodies display his skill at adapting folk music for the concert setting. The two soloists will come together for Brahms’ brilliant Double Concerto, written near the end of his career for performance by two of his closest friends; its finale recalls the verve and shimmer of the Hungarian Dances.
