Beethoven | Leonore Overture No. 3 |
Schumann | Concert Piece for Four Horns and Orchestra |
Adams | Absolute Jest, for string quartet and orchestra |
Beethoven | Symphony No. 8 in F major |
We open the year 2019 – Alabama’s bicentennial – by featuring the musicians of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra front and center. Our horn section will perform Schumann’s commanding Concert Piece, and our principal strings will give the Alabama premiere of John Adams’ Absolute Jest (2012), a dialogue between quartet and orchestra which mischievously samples many motives and themes from Beethoven. The great master himself anchors the program: we’ll hear one of several overtures he composed for his opera Fidelio, as well as the remarkably forward-thinking Eighth Symphony.
